Peridot is a variety of Olivine, a gemstone frequently found embedded in pallasitic meteorites. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in a one-color palette – green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depend on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow-green to olive green. Peridot and diamond are the only two gems observed to be formed not in Earth’s crust, but deep in the molten rock of the upper mantle. Gem-quality peridot is rare on Earth’s surface due to its susceptibility to alteration during its movement from deep within the mantle and weathering at the surface. Peridot is the August birthstone.
