Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate gemstone that is usually vivid pink. In its pure form (rare), it is typically a rose-red color crystal. Few pure, facetable specimens exist over 5 carats. Rhodochrosite is rare due to a combination of factors: specific geological (hydrothermal) conditions required for its formation and the limited number of localities where it’s found. Malachite is an opaque, green-banded mineral noteworthy for its rich green color and high copper content. It is found worldwide, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Zambia, Namibia, Mexico, and the Southwestern United States, most notably in Arizona. This particular stone was mined in Zaire, Africa. Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints from antiquity until circa 1800.
