Malachite is an opaque, green-banded mineral noteworthy for its rich green color and high copper content. It is found worldwide, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Zambia, Namibia, Mexico, and the Southwestern United States, most notably in Arizona. This particular stone was mined in Zaire, Africa. Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints from antiquity until circa 1800. Malachite is also used for decorative purposes, such as in wands and the Malachite Room in the Hermitage Museum, which features a huge malachite vase, and the Malachite Room in Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City. Russian Tsars obtained malachite for decorating their castles, paneling the walls, and for beautiful inlaid works.
