A doublet is a thin layer of crystal opal firmly affixed to a layer of common (non-gem) black opal. The backing serves to highlight and enhance the color of the opal. Doublets are a fantastic and far less expensive alternative to solid Australian Black Opal, offering the appearance of solid, gem-quality black opal for typically 1/10 the cost. This doublet is noteworthy for the bright red play of color as the stone moves.
