VERY LARGE LIGHTNING RIDGE CRYSTAL OPAL DOUBLET, measures 3.5cm by 1.5cm.
Crystal opals, valued as the second most precious type after black opals, are transparent to translucent, allowing light to pass through and revealing a beautiful, brilliant play of color. This doublet is a thin layer of Lightning Ridge crystal opal firmly affixed to a layer of ironstone. The backing serves to highlight and enhance the vivid peacock blue-green color of the opal. Doublets are a fantastic and far less expensive alternative to solid Australian Black Opal. If this stone were a solid Lightning Ridge black opal, it would likely sell for @ USD 30,000.00.
